Heavy Rains Trigger Flood-Like Situation Across Odisha, Puri Beaches Put Under Red Alert

Heavy rainfall has pushed several parts of Odisha into a precarious situation, with floodwaters entering residential areas, roads being cut off and agricultural fields submerged. While Banpur in Khordha district is grappling with rising water levels, Malkangiri has also reported flood-related distress. In coastal Puri, authorities have intensified safety measures as rough seas and high waves linked to a deep depression have prompted a complete ban on sea bathing.

The situation in Banpur has disrupted normal life as water levels continued to rise following heavy rain. Several areas have been affected, with floodwater entering residential localities and creating difficulties for residents. The Banpur-Balugaon road, one of the important routes in the area, has also been disconnected because of the rising water.

The impact has extended to the agricultural sector, with paddy fields inundated by floodwater. The submergence of farmland has raised concerns among farmers, particularly as continued rainfall could prolong the waterlogging and cause further damage to crops.

Malkangiri has also witnessed the impact of heavy rainfall and rising water levels. On September 25, ADM Somnath Pradhan visited flood-affected areas to assess the situation and take stock of the difficulties faced by people in the affected region.

A rescue operation was also carried out in Mathili after a family became stranded in floodwater. The Mathili Fire Service Team rescued the family after the water level of the Saberi River rose near Nadiguda village following heavy rainfall. The incident highlighted the risks posed by rapidly rising river levels in low-lying areas.

Meanwhile, the administration in Puri has stepped up precautions along the coast as the sea turned increasingly turbulent. Red flags have been hoisted at the beach and tourists have been prohibited from entering the sea for bathing. Lifeguards have been deployed across different sectors to warn visitors and prevent accidents.

The Puri administration has made it clear that tourists should stay away from the water until conditions improve. Officials have also been instructed to ensure that no tourist enters the sea for bathing, with the administration placing particular emphasis on preventing drowning incidents.

The rough sea has also affected fishing activity along the coast. Fishermen who had ventured into the sea have returned to shore, while Fisheries Department officials have advised them to keep their boats, fishing nets and machinery in safe locations.

As the weather system continues to influence conditions across Odisha, authorities in the affected districts are maintaining heightened vigilance. In Puri, the cancellation of leave for officers and employees reflects the seriousness of the situation, while rescue and monitoring teams remain prepared to respond to emergencies.

With heavy rainfall continuing to affect several areas and water levels rising in rivers and low-lying regions, residents and tourists have been urged to follow official advisories. The immediate priority for the administration remains preventing loss of life while monitoring flood-prone areas and coastal conditions.
