Heavy rains lashed several parts of Delhi and the adjoining National Capital Region on Friday, bringing much-needed relief from the prevailing heat but also exposing vulnerabilities in the city’s infrastructure. Among the incidents reported during the downpour, a parking lot wall collapsed on at least eight cars in South Delhi’s Deoli, causing extensive damage to the vehicles.
Fortunately, no injuries or casualties were reported in the incident as there was no one inside the vehicles when the wall came crashing down.
The incident occurred amid heavy rainfall and waterlogging in the area. According to local residents, accumulated rainwater may have contributed to the collapse. They also alleged that ongoing civic work in the locality had disrupted drainage and worsened the situation.
“Approximately 8–10 vehicles were damaged. Work was being carried out behind the area; the entire lane had been dug up, and the wall collapsed because water had accumulated,” a resident said.
Locals further claimed that the problem was linked to inadequate drainage arrangements during the monsoon. They said vehicles had been parked at the location for nearly eight years without any such incident.
“We have been parking our vehicles here for around eight years and have never faced such a problem before. This is the first time an incident like this has happened,” another resident said, alleging that civic work had not been executed properly.
The resident claimed that several lanes had been dug up and sewers were clogged, leaving rainwater with no proper outlet. According to locals, the resulting water accumulation weakened the area around the parking lot and eventually led to the wall collapsing onto the parked vehicles.
The Deoli incident was among several weather-related problems reported across the national capital as heavy rain tested Delhi’s already stressed drainage and road infrastructure.
Waterlogging was reported from several parts of the city, particularly in low-lying areas, while heavy traffic congestion disrupted movement on major roads. The downpour also led to tree-fall incidents in various parts of Delhi.
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi received complaints related to waterlogging and fallen trees from multiple zones. Tree-fall incidents were reported in the Keshavpuram, South, Central, West and Civil Lines zones.
Traffic movement was severely affected at several key locations. Major congestion was reported on the Mehrauli-Badarpur Road, ITO, Wazirabad Road, Patel Road, Rohtak Road, Shankar Road, Kirti Nagar and the Delhi-Jaipur Highway. Commuters also faced delays around Peeragarhi and Shaheen Bagh.
In east Delhi, traffic crawled on GT Road, GTB Enclave and Dilshad Garden, adding to commuters’ difficulties during the peak impact of the rain.
The latest spell of rainfall has once again highlighted the challenges faced by Delhi during the monsoon season. While rain provides relief from high temperatures and improves air quality temporarily, inadequate drainage, waterlogging, damaged roads and poorly managed civic works can quickly turn heavy showers into a major disruption for residents.
The Deoli wall collapse has also raised concerns over the safety of structures located near waterlogged areas and the need for proper drainage during ongoing construction and civic works. With the monsoon continuing, residents are likely to remain concerned about the city's preparedness to deal with further spells of heavy rainfall.
