Gujarat Cabinet, Barring CM, Resigns En Masse, Paving Way for Major Revamp Ahead of Elections

In a significant political move, the entire council of ministers in Gujarat, barring Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, submitted their resignations on Thursday. This sweeping move sets the stage for a major cabinet expansion and reshuffle scheduled for Friday, as the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) fine-tunes its team ahead of crucial electoral battles.

The mass resignation, which was promptly accepted by the Chief Minister, effectively dissolved the existing cabinet. The Gujarat cabinet, until Thursday, comprised 17 ministers, including the CM. Of these, eight held cabinet-rank positions, while an equal number served as Ministers of State (MoS).

The decision does not come as a surprise to political observers. Officials had indicated that the BJP-led government was preparing for an expansion to inject fresh energy and rebalance its representation. With a permissible strength of 27 ministers—15% of the 182-member Legislative Assembly—the current government was operating with a leaner team, leaving room for significant new inductions.

According to a report from the PTI news agency, citing a senior BJP leader, the state is expected to witness the induction of approximately 10 new ministers in the upcoming expansion. The report also suggested a substantial overhaul, with nearly half of the incumbent ministers likely to be replaced.

A Strategic Overhaul

This large-scale restructuring is seen as a strategic maneuver by the BJP's central leadership to consolidate its position in its ideological heartland. The move allows the party to:

  1. Reward Performance: Induct new faces who have performed well in the organization or as legislators.

  2. Balance Regional and Caste Equations: Ensure a more balanced representation from different regions and caste groups across the state, which is critical for electoral success.

  3. Infuse Fresh Energy: Bring in younger leaders and new perspectives to connect with a broader demographic.

  4. Prepare for the Future: With state assembly elections always on the horizon, this reshuffle is a proactive step to present a renewed and robust face of the government to the electorate.

The resignation of the entire cabinet provides Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, who took office in September 2021, with a clean slate to build a new team that aligns with the party's current vision and strategy. All eyes are now on Raj Bhavan, where the swearing-in ceremony for the new and expanded cabinet is expected to take place on Friday, marking a new chapter for the Gujarat government.
