Green Development Pact : History of good climate will be written on Indian soil

Climate change has always been an important issue for Narendra Modi. From time to time, he keeps making some important mentions regarding climate on international forums. He also keeps encouraging many countries in the world that climate should now become a people's movement. In such a situation, when the whole world is present in India's courtyard, it would be surprising if Narendra Modi does not say anything new regarding climate. Articles can be written on the achievements of this time's G20 Summit from many different dimensions because this time, the G20 held under the chairmanship of India has made India proud in many ways worldwide. We all feel that being a witness to such a historic international summit must be a very big event because no Asian country has had such an honour. But in this column we talk only about climate context, so let us discuss that today.

Many important discussions took place regarding climate in the G20 Summit held under the chairmanship of India, the most important attraction of which is 'Green Development Pact'. Every year, there is some discussion about this pact, but this time, the agreements reached under the Green Development Pact are very important and landmark. In this pact, improvement targets for the year 2030 have been set. However, before discussing  this pact, let us look at the figures. G20 countries may be small in number, but their contribution to global green house gas emissions is as much as 80%. At that time, if any important and positive changes are to be made in the global climate, the G20 countries will play a key role.

At such a time, it is extremely important to reach a unanimous agreement among the G20 countries regarding climate change. However, under the leadership of India, the G20 countries have agreed on many important issues regarding climate change, one of the most important agreements is that all the G20 countries have promised to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to zero by the middle of this century. This agreement will have a direct positive  impact on the increasing temperature.

Now, let's talk about green development. Under this pact, all the G20 countries are moving forward for green development. All these countries will focus on sustainable consumption. For this, various policies will be prepared for sustainable consumption, and under this, funding arrangements will be made for all the countries. Another important issue of this pact is energy transition. Energy transition has now become a demand of today's times, and hence, India has proposed a well-organized framework for all the countries.

Under this proposal, it has been decided that G20 countries will focus on clean, sustainable, and economically viable green energy. A huge infrastructure will be created for green energy.  Under this issue, Biofuel Alliance and Green Hydrogen Innovation Center will be established by the year 2030. The third important aspect of this pact was climate finance. Because any step towards climate action is not possible without proper infrastructure and all the green options currently available in the world are not possible without infrastructure finance. Because if this finance is available, then big developing countries will be able to focus on environmental protection. Otherwise, climate action will become an expensive affair for them.

The fourth important part of this pact is ocean based green economy. In this issue, it was decided that the world's oceans have an important contribution to development, but it was also decided that a roadmap would also be decided for the sustainable use of the oceans. So that the oceans and the entire ecosystem related to the oceans get its benefit. Which will help in restoration and conservation of the world's marine ecosystems. The fifth important point is the creation of disaster resilient infrastructure. India has previously promoted disaster-resilient infrastructure alliances. Now, we also have the Disaster Risk Reduction Working Group, which India has introduced in the G-20.

However, leaders of other countries of the world are not as serious about climate issues as Narendra Modi and India. Even during the Paris Pact, great things were said, but till now, no country except India has adhered to the Paris Climate Agreement. Although the Green Development Pact has been signed and discussed in India, Narendra Modi will personally take care of this pact and encourage the leaders of other countries of the world. I have said many times in this column that India is now a world leader in the field of climate action. Due to the leadership of Narendra Modi, we have taken many steps for climate action. The whole world has taken note of India's steps. That is why I am confident that the G20 countries will also make the Green Development Pact successful under the leadership of India.
