Government Debunks AI-Generated Video Claiming Free Mobile Recharges for Students

The Government of India has dismissed as false a viral video that allegedly shows Narendra Modi promising free mobile recharges for school-going children. Authorities have clarified that the video is misleading and was generated using artificial intelligence (AI) technology to spread misinformation.

The Press Information Bureau (PIB), through its Fact Check Unit, stated that no such announcement has been made by the Prime Minister or any government authority. The agency confirmed that the circulating video is fabricated and urged citizens not to fall for such deceptive content.

Officials highlighted the growing misuse of AI tools in creating deepfake videos that appear highly convincing but are entirely false. They warned that such content can create confusion among the public, especially when it involves government schemes or benefits.

To counter misinformation, the government has advised people to verify any claims related to public schemes or announcements through the official portal, myscheme.gov.in, which provides authentic and updated information on government initiatives.

The PIB Fact Check Unit also encouraged citizens to remain vigilant while consuming content on social media and to rely only on verified sources. Sharing unverified or fake information, authorities stressed, can contribute to the spread of misinformation and unnecessary panic.

As AI-generated content becomes increasingly sophisticated, experts emphasize the importance of digital awareness and critical evaluation of online information. The government reiterated its commitment to tackling fake news and ensuring that accurate information reaches the public.
