The victory also gave Mandhana a historic personal milestone as she became the first woman cricketer to reach 11,000 international runs.
The final was expected to feature a familiar contest, with Sri Lanka once again standing between India and Asian Games gold. The two teams had met in the 2023 final in Hangzhou, while their rivalry had also continued into the Women's Asia Cup final earlier this month. But in Nisshin, Nagoya, India left little room for suspense.
Captain Harmanpreet Kaur's decision to bat first proved the beginning of a commanding performance. India’s opening pair immediately attacked Sri Lanka’s spin-oriented bowling combination, refusing to allow the fielding side to settle into the contest.
Mandhana and Shafali added 99 runs for the opening wicket, laying the foundation for one of India's biggest totals in the competition. India raced to 59 without losing a wicket during the powerplay, with Mandhana combining timing and placement with powerful strokes while Shafali provided the early aggression.
Shafali eventually departed for 48 from 29 deliveries, but the momentum did not disappear. Mandhana continued to dictate the tempo and reached her half-century from just 30 balls. She eventually made 79 from 45 deliveries, striking five fours and seven sixes.

Her unbeaten 49 from only 22 deliveries provided India with a powerful finish and pushed the total beyond the 200-run mark. Sri Lanka therefore needed 217 for victory, but the chase never developed into a contest.
India's bowlers attacked from the outset and kept the pressure on throughout the innings. Chamari Athapaththu offered some resistance with 29, but wickets continued to fall around her. India's spin attack then closed the door completely, with Deepti Sharma claiming three wickets for only six runs, while Shafali Verma, Shree Charani and Shreyanka Patil contributed two wickets apiece.
Sri Lanka were eventually dismissed for just 69, handing India a 147-run victory.
The scale of the result underlined India's all-round superiority in the final. The batters had produced a record-setting total, while the bowlers ensured that Sri Lanka never came close to mounting a chase.
For India, the victory carried significance beyond another medal. The women's team had entered the competition as defending champions and successfully repeated its Hangzhou triumph. The result also opened India's gold-medal account at the 2026 Asian Games.
