A political confrontation in Delhi has intensified after Public Works Department Minister Parvesh Verma hit back at AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal over a controversial incident during a road inspection in Tilak Nagar. After a video showing Verma slapping a man triggered demands for his arrest, the minister accused an AAP worker of abusing his family and alleged that the person involved had previously faced an assault case. Kejriwal, meanwhile, has sought immediate action against Verma, turning a road-quality dispute into a wider political confrontation.
The dispute erupted on Sunday when Verma was inspecting a newly constructed road in west Delhi. A video circulated on social media showed the minister pulling down the mobile phone of a man recording the proceedings and appearing to slap him. The man was identified as Saheb Singh, who has been described as an associate of Tilak Nagar AAP MLA Jarnail Singh. Singh subsequently lodged a complaint, according to police sources.
AAP leaders alleged that the confrontation followed questions over the quality of the road. They claimed that local representatives had pointed out problems with the road surface during the inspection. The incident quickly became a political issue, with Kejriwal demanding Verma's arrest and announcing that he would visit the area to inspect the road himself.
Verma has presented a different account of the confrontation. In a video message on Monday, he said the person involved was not a member of the youth demographic that Kejriwal had invoked in his criticism. Verma alleged that the individual had previously been arrested in connection with an assault on an MCD official and said an FIR had been registered in that case. Reports also indicate that police have confirmed the existence of a previous assault case involving the complainant.
Taking direct aim at Kejriwal, Verma rejected what he described as an attempt to portray the incident simply as a confrontation between a minister and a young person. He warned that the government would not tolerate attempts by political workers or elected representatives to obstruct development work or threaten government officials and contractors.
The minister also alleged that the incident was preceded by abusive remarks directed at his family. According to Verma's version, the road inspection had been accompanied by a confrontation involving AAP workers. He has further alleged that Jarnail Singh was seeking a commission from a contractor, a charge that remains an allegation and has been rejected by the AAP side. Verma said the government would independently examine the quality of road construction, including through technical testing, to establish whether the work met required standards.
Kejriwal, however, has focused on the video of the physical confrontation. In his Monday response, he criticised Verma and demanded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi ensure action against the Delhi minister. Kejriwal also framed the controversy in the context of the government's engagement with Gen Z, arguing that young people expect accountability and straightforwardness from those in power.
The BJP has defended Verma while expressing regret over the incident. Party leaders have highlighted the previous case involving the man seen in the video and described him as a repeat offender, while blaming the confrontation on alleged provocation.
The controversy has therefore developed along two parallel tracks. The AAP is focusing on the alleged assault and demanding action against the minister, while Verma and the BJP are emphasising the circumstances leading up to the confrontation and the alleged conduct of those present at the site. The underlying issue of road quality has also become part of the political dispute, with Verma promising an independent examination of the construction.
For now, the competing accounts remain central to the controversy. The available video establishes that a physical confrontation occurred, but the precise sequence of events and the allegations made by both sides are matters for investigation and verification. What began as a local inspection of road work has consequently evolved into a fresh political clash between the BJP-led Delhi government and the AAP leadership.
