Fuel, Fertiliser Supplies Remain Stable Despite West Asia Tensions, Says Government

Amid growing concerns over the escalating situation in West Asia and its potential impact on global energy markets, the Government of India on Monday assured citizens that the supply of crude oil, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), natural gas, and fertilisers remains stable across the country.Addressing an inter-ministerial media briefing in New Delhi, Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Praveen Khanuja, stated that India has sufficient stocks of petroleum products and that the government has taken proactive measures to safeguard the nation’s energy security.

Khanuja said that adequate quantities of petrol, diesel, and LPG are available nationwide, ensuring that consumers and industries face no disruptions despite geopolitical uncertainties in the West Asian region. He emphasized that the government has been closely monitoring the evolving situation and coordinating with stakeholders to maintain uninterrupted fuel supplies.

Providing an update on domestic production, Khanuja revealed that Indian refineries and gas-processing facilities collectively produced around 53,000 metric tonnes of petroleum products on Sunday. He noted that this output is approximately 60 per cent higher than pre-crisis levels, reflecting the country's preparedness and ability to meet domestic demand.

“The country is maintaining comfortable fuel stocks, and there is no cause for concern regarding the availability of petroleum products,” he said, reassuring consumers and businesses alike.

The government’s assurance comes at a time when global energy markets are witnessing heightened volatility due to ongoing tensions in West Asia, a region that plays a crucial role in the world’s oil and gas supply chain. Any disruption in the region often raises concerns about fuel availability and price fluctuations in importing countries such as India.

In addition to addressing energy security, the government also reviewed the availability of fertilisers ahead of the ongoing Kharif sowing season.

Speaking at the same briefing, Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilisers, Aparna Sharma, said that fertiliser stocks across the country are currently at comfortable levels and that there are no major concerns regarding supply.

She informed that the Department of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare has reassessed the fertiliser requirement for the 2026 Kharif season at more than 380 lakh metric tonnes. According to Sharma, farmers have already purchased approximately 86 lakh metric tonnes, accounting for over 23 per cent of the total seasonal requirement.

“The overall stock position of fertilisers is comfortable, and there is currently no major challenge in availability across the country,” Sharma said.

The government’s dual assurance on fuel and fertiliser supplies is expected to provide relief to consumers, farmers, and industry stakeholders, particularly as uncertainties persist in international markets. Officials reiterated that continuous monitoring mechanisms are in place to ensure that essential commodities remain available without interruption.

With both energy and agricultural input supplies reported to be secure, the Centre has sought to reassure the public that adequate preparations have been made to withstand any external disruptions arising from the evolving geopolitical situation in West Asia.
