The historic town of Khajuraho in Madhya Pradesh, long celebrated worldwide for its exquisite, UNESCO-listed temples that narrate tales of a bygone era, is poised for a dramatic transformation. This symbol of cultural heritage is now set to carve a new identity on India's defence map, with plans underway to establish the country's largest airbase in its vicinity.
In a significant strategic move, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has initiated the preliminary process for this ambitious project. The proposed airbase is designed to be a pivotal hub for the Indian Air Force (IAF), serving as a key operational centre for fighter jets and military transport aircraft. As per initial plans, approximately 1,000 acres of land near the existing Khajuraho Airport have been identified for the project. Once all necessary approvals are secured, the land acquisition process is expected to commence early next year. Officials believe this development will substantially enhance both the strategic footprint and the economic prospects of the region.
MP VD Sharma Confirms the Development
Confirming the significant progress, Member of Parliament and former Madhya Pradesh BJP president, Vishnu Dutt (VD) Sharma, stated that he has been in regular discussions with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh to ensure better utilisation of the Khajuraho Airport.
Sharma revealed that a comprehensive survey was recently conducted at four potential airport sites—Prayagraj, Jhansi, Gwalior, and Khajuraho. Among these, Khajuraho emerged as the most suitable and secure location for developing a full-fledged airbase.
"The initial groundwork has already begun," Sharma said, underscoring the project's momentum. He emphasised that once completed, the project will significantly boost not only Khajuraho's strategic relevance but also fortify Madhya Pradesh's overall defence infrastructure.
Strategic Imperative: Why Khajuraho Was Chosen
Experts point to a confluence of strategic and logistical factors that made Khajuraho the preferred choice for this critical defence asset.
Sparse Population and Expansion Potential: The region is relatively sparsely populated, offering the ample space required for the airbase's construction and future expansion without significant displacement or security concerns.
Ideal Strategic Location: Khajuraho is strategically positioned—neither too close nor too far from the western border with Pakistan. This makes it an ideal location for the swift deployment and operational manoeuvring of aircraft.
Complementing Gwalior Airbase: Currently, Gwalior is the only major airbase in Madhya Pradesh. The new base in Khajuraho will create a complementary geographical footprint, strengthening the IAF's operational corridor in the central heartland of India.
Favourable Terrain and Weather: The area's plateau terrain and generally favourable weather conditions provide a stable environment for extensive flight operations. Low civilian air traffic in the zone further reduces complications for large-scale military exercises.
Existing Logistical Advantages: Khajuraho already boasts strong air and road connectivity, thanks to its status as a major international tourist destination. This existing infrastructure is a significant logistical advantage for the rapid mobilisation of men and material.
The plan to establish a massive airbase in Khajuraho marks a new chapter for the ancient town. While it will continue to enchant the world with its architectural marvels, it is also preparing to play a crucial role in safeguarding the nation's skies, seamlessly blending its rich past with a powerful, strategic future.
