The development over the last decade has been significantly influenced by a series of government schemes aimed at addressing various socio-economic challenges and driving inclusive growth across the nation. These schemes, have played a pivotal role in transforming key sectors and uplifting millions of lives.

The government has prioritised infrastructure development through initiatives like the Bharatmala Project, Sagarmala Project, and Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY). These schemes aim to improve road connectivity, modernise ports, and enhance rural road networks, thereby fostering economic growth and connectivity across the country.

Through infrastructure development, community participation, and pollution control measures, Namami Gange seeks to preserve India's cultural and environmental heritage.

These government schemes, along with others focused on agriculture, education, housing, and social welfare, have collectively contributed to India's development story over the last decade.

The schemes…

Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Clean India Mission)

Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, launched by the Indian government in 2014, has heralded a monumental shift in India's approach to sanitation and cleanliness. This initiative aimed to eliminate open defecation, manage solid waste effectively, and instigate behavioural changes towards sanitation practices. Over the years, the mission has substantially improved public health and hygiene standards by constructing millions of toilets and fostering a culture of cleanliness across rural and urban India.

The primary objective of the campaign was to eradicate open defecation through the construction of millions of toilets in rural and urban areas, marking significant progress towards sanitation infrastructure development. The Abhiyan emphasised not only physical infrastructure but also the importance of altering societal attitudes and behaviours towards cleanliness. Extensive awareness campaigns and community engagement activities were instrumental in promoting hygiene practices.

The campaign has led to a substantial increase in sanitation coverage, with many villages declared open defecation-free (ODF). Efforts to improve cleanliness in urban areas have included waste segregation, public toilet construction, and cleanliness drives. Swachh Bharat Abhiyan has heightened awareness regarding sanitation among both the general public and policymakers, fostering greater participation in cleanliness initiatives.

The campaign has garnered international acclaim for its ambitious objectives and significant strides in improving sanitation and cleanliness standards.

The challenges…

Despite these accomplishments, challenges persist in sustaining behavioural changes, ensuring infrastructure maintenance, and addressing waste management issues.

Make in India

It has incentivised innovation and research in manufacturing through various policies and programs, promoting indigenous production and reducing dependency on imports. Make in India has garnered international recognition, positioning India as an attractive destination for manufacturing investments and collaborations.

The challenges…

While Make in India has achieved considerable progress, challenges such as infrastructure constraints, bureaucratic hurdles, and skill shortages persist. Continued policy reforms and strategic interventions are crucial for sustaining and enhancing the initiative's success.

Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana

Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, launched in May 2016, aims to improve the health of women and children by providing clean cooking fuel to below-poverty-line families. By distributing LPG connections, the scheme has mitigated health risks associated with traditional cooking methods and fostered a smoke-free environment.

The scheme has successfully provided free LPG connections to millions of economically disadvantaged households, reducing reliance on traditional biomass fuels. Transitioning to LPG has led to improved health outcomes, particularly for women and children, by reducing indoor air pollution and associated health risks.

The scheme claims to have empowered women by granting them access to clean cooking fuel, thereby promoting autonomy and decision-making within households. The adoption of LPG has environmental benefits, including reduced deforestation and lower emissions, aligning with India's sustainability commitments.

The government claims that access to LPG under PMUY has economic advantages, saving time and money spent on fuel collection and creating opportunities for productive activities. PMUY has expanded LPG distribution infrastructure, making clean cooking fuel more accessible to underserved communities and creating employment opportunities.

The challenges…

However, challenges such as sustaining LPG usage, addressing affordability issues, and ensuring safety measures persist, necessitating continued efforts and targeted interventions.

Ayushman Bharat

It promotes access to quality healthcare by encouraging participation of public and private hospitals, thereby enhancing healthcare service availability.

The scheme incentivises the development and strengthening of healthcare infrastructure, particularly in underserved regions, contributing to improved healthcare delivery systems.

The scheme also leverages technology to streamline beneficiary identification and claims processing, enhancing transparency and efficiency in healthcare delivery.

The challenges…

While Ayushman Bharat has made significant progress, challenges such as ensuring equitable access and enhancing quality of care remain, requiring continued investment and innovation.

PMKVY has trained numerous individuals in various sectors, enhancing their employability and contributing to economic development. The scheme emphasises industry collaboration to ensure training programs are aligned with market needs, enhancing the relevance of skill development.

PMKVY recognises and certifies existing skills, formalising the informal workforce and improving their employability. It targets youth across urban and rural areas, focusing on marginalised communities and promoting inclusivity.

The scheme prioritises quality assurance through accreditation of training centres and standardised assessment processes. Positive feedback from employers reflects the quality and relevance of skills acquired by PMKVY beneficiaries.

The scheme has facilitated international collaborations to exchange best practices and promote global cooperation in skill development.

The challenges…

Challenges such as scalability, regional disparities, and quality enhancement necessitate continued investment and stakeholder engagement.

The initiative enhances financial literacy through educational campaigns, fostering responsible financial behaviour. The accounts are linked with insurance and pension schemes, providing social security coverage to beneficiaries.

PMJDY promotes digital payments, contributing to the formalisation of the economy and financial inclusion.

The challenges…

Continued efforts are required to address challenges such as dormant accounts and quality banking services in rural areas.
