Former Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa Accused of Sexual Assault on Minor Girl

Former Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa Accused of Sexual Assault on Minor Girl

Former Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa finds himself embroiled in a grave controversy as an FIR has been filed against him for allegedly sexually assaulting a minor girl. The case, registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012 (POCSO) and IPC Section 354 (A), has sent shockwaves through the political landscape of the state.

The alleged incident reportedly occurred on February 2, 2024, when a 17-year-old girl, accompanied by her mother, sought Yediyurappa's assistance regarding another rape case. According to reports, the victim's mother lodged a sexual harassment complaint against the 81-year-old politician on Thursday evening, leading to the registration of the POCSO case past midnight at the Sadashivanagar police station in Bengaluru.

The FIR paints a harrowing picture of events, alleging that the victim visited Yediyurappa seeking help with a previous sexual assault case. However, instead of offering assistance, the former Chief Minister purportedly dragged her into a room and sexually assaulted her. Distraught, the victim escaped and confided in her mother about the ordeal she had endured.

In her statement to the police, the victim's mother described the distressing sequence of events. She recounted how Yediyurappa had initially appeared willing to help, only to betray their trust by allegedly assaulting her daughter. The mother expressed her initial fear in coming forward with the complaint but ultimately decided to pursue legal action against the influential politician.

Yediyurappa, on the other hand, has denied the allegations, asserting that he had merely attempted to assist a distressed woman who had visited his residence. He claimed to have promptly informed the police commissioner about the matter and accused the woman of turning against him. However, the emergence of the FIR has cast a shadow over his political career, prompting speculation about potential motives behind the accusations.

The legal ramifications of the allegations are severe. Punishment for penetrative sexual assault, as outlined by POCSO, carries a minimum sentence of 10 years' imprisonment, extendable to life imprisonment. Moreover, if the victim is below 16 years of age, the term of imprisonment may extend up to life.

The case has ignited public outrage and sparked debates about the vulnerability of minors and the accountability of those in positions of power. It underscores the urgent need for stringent enforcement of laws safeguarding children from sexual exploitation and emphasizes the importance of holding perpetrators accountable regardless of their stature or influence.

As the investigation unfolds, all eyes are on the judicial system to ensure that justice is served and that the rights of the victim are upheld. The outcome of this case will not only determine the fate of the accused but also send a powerful message about society's commitment to protecting its most vulnerable members.
