The Jharkhand Crime Investigation Department (CID) has arrested former Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) Chairman L. Khiangte for his alleged involvement in irregularities related to recruitment examinations conducted by the JPSC and Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC), sources said.
Khiangte had been questioned by the CID several times in connection with alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations. His arrest is being seen as a significant development in the ongoing investigation into complaints of manipulation and other discrepancies in the recruitment process.
The allegations have triggered growing concern among job aspirants in the state, who have been demanding greater transparency and strict action against those responsible for alleged irregularities. The recruitment controversies have also put the functioning of the state's examination and selection bodies under scrutiny.
The Hemant Soren-led Jharkhand government had earlier announced a multi-pronged action plan to investigate allegations of irregularities in government recruitment examinations. The plan included investigations by the CID as well as the Enforcement Directorate (ED), depending on the nature of the allegations and suspected financial aspects of the cases.
The government also agreed to several demands raised by protesting students following a marathon meeting held on Sunday. Among the key demands accepted was the cancellation of the 14th JPSC examination. The government also agreed to demands concerning backlog recruitment examinations scheduled for 2023 and 2025.
The students had intensified their agitation, seeking corrective measures in the recruitment process and action against officials allegedly responsible for irregularities. They also demanded that recruitment examinations be conducted in a fair, transparent and time-bound manner.
The arrest of the former JPSC chairman is likely to intensify the investigation into the alleged recruitment scams. Investigators are expected to examine the decision-making process, examination procedures and the role of officials and other individuals who may have been connected with the alleged irregularities.
The development comes at a time when the state government is under pressure to restore confidence among thousands of aspirants preparing for government jobs.
