India on Friday summoned US Chargé d’Affaires Jason Meeks to lodge a strong protest over attacks on Indian-linked vessels in the Arabian Sea amid the escalating conflict between the United States and Iran. This marks the second time in the last 48 hours that the senior American diplomat has been called in by New Delhi, underscoring India's growing concern over the safety of its maritime interests and citizens in the region.
Jason Meeks, who serves as the Deputy Chief of Mission at the US Embassy in New Delhi, was summoned by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). He met with the Additional Secretary (Americas), where India conveyed its concerns regarding the deteriorating security situation in the Gulf region and the risks posed to Indian vessels and seafarers.
The diplomatic move follows an incident on Thursday in which a merchant vessel, MT Jalveer, carrying 20 Indian crew members, came under attack near the Shinas port of Oman. The vessel, which sails under the Guinea flag, was reportedly targeted amid heightened military activity linked to the ongoing hostilities between Washington and Tehran.
Several videos circulating on social media showed thick smoke rising from the ship, raising fears about the safety of those onboard. The footage quickly gained attention as concerns mounted over the impact of the conflict on commercial shipping routes in the region.
In response, the Indian Embassy in Oman stated that it was closely monitoring the situation and was in constant touch with local authorities and relevant stakeholders. Officials have been working to ascertain the condition of the vessel and ensure the safety and well-being of the Indian crew members.
The Arabian Sea and the Gulf region have become increasingly volatile as tensions between the United States and Iran continue to escalate. Commercial vessels transiting through key maritime corridors have faced growing security threats, prompting concerns among major trading nations, including India, which relies heavily on these routes for energy imports and international trade.
India has consistently emphasized the need for de-escalation and the protection of civilian shipping in international waters. The latest diplomatic protest reflects New Delhi’s determination to safeguard its maritime assets and citizens while seeking accountability for incidents that endanger Indian lives.
The repeated summoning of the US envoy within a span of two days signals the seriousness with which India views the attacks on vessels linked to its interests. As the conflict in the region intensifies, New Delhi is expected to continue engaging with all concerned parties to ensure the security of Indian nationals and commercial operations in the Gulf.
