A shocking incident of alleged domestic violence has emerged from Bahraich, where a man was arrested for reportedly attempting to kill his ex-wife by tying her to a motorcycle and dragging her along a road, police said on Friday.
The incident occurred in the Nanpara Kotwali area of the district and left both the woman and the accused seriously injured, according to officials.
Police identified the accused as Rahees, a resident of Musallampur village in the Ramgaon area. He had married Reshma, a resident of Nanpara, about a year ago. However, the couple separated following disputes, and their divorce was finalised in January this year. Since then, the woman had been living at her parental home.
According to eyewitnesses, the accused arrived in Nanpara on Wednesday and encountered his former wife near Laxmanpur Matehi village while she was returning home. An argument reportedly broke out between the two, which quickly escalated into violence.
Rahees allegedly rammed his motorcycle into the woman, following which he tied her to the vehicle and dragged her along the road, police said. Her cries for help alerted locals, who rushed to the scene and managed to rescue her.
The accused was subsequently beaten up by an enraged crowd, leaving him injured. Police reached the spot shortly after and took him into custody. Both the woman and the accused were admitted to a hospital for treatment.
Circle Officer Pahup Singh confirmed that a case has been registered against the accused under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including attempt to murder, causing hurt, criminal intimidation, and insult.
“He has been arrested, and further investigation is underway,” the officer said.
The incident has once again raised concerns over rising cases of violence against women and the need for stronger safeguards and timely intervention in domestic disputes.
