ED Raids Seven Premises in Kolkata, Delhi and Ranchi in Probe Linked to Urdu Daily, TMC MP Nadimul Haque

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has stepped up its investigation into a case involving Akhbar-E-Mashriq Private Limited, publisher of an Urdu daily newspaper, and its Director and Trinamool Congress (TMC) Rajya Sabha MP Nadimul Haque.

As part of the probe, the federal agency conducted searches at seven premises across Kolkata, Delhi and Ranchi, officials said. The searches are linked to an Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) registered by the ED on the basis of an FIR lodged by the Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate.

According to the investigating agency, the case involves allegations concerning the publication and dissemination of material allegedly promoting communal disharmony. The probe, however, extends beyond the content-related allegations, with the ED also examining suspected financial irregularities associated with the entities and individuals under investigation.

The agency said its investigation includes allegations of illegal transactions, unaccounted cash dealings and receipt of funds from suspicious sources. The financial trail is therefore expected to form an important part of the ED's inquiry as investigators examine transactions and other financial records linked to the case.

The searches across three cities indicate that the agency is examining multiple locations potentially connected with the newspaper's operations and the alleged financial transactions. During such searches, investigators typically examine documents, electronic records and financial information that could help establish the movement and source of funds.

The case originated with an FIR registered by the Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate, following allegations relating to the dissemination of material considered objectionable by the complainant or investigating authorities. The ED subsequently registered its ECIR to examine the alleged financial aspects falling within its jurisdiction.

The involvement of Nadimul Haque, a TMC MP and Director of the company, has brought additional political attention to the investigation. However, the allegations being examined by the agency remain subject to investigation, and the searches themselves do not establish guilt.

The ED's action comes as financial investigation agencies continue to scrutinise cases where alleged criminal activity is suspected to have been accompanied by questionable financial transactions. Investigators are expected to establish whether the alleged unaccounted cash and suspicious funding had any connection with the activities under scrutiny.

Further developments are likely to depend on the material and financial records recovered during the searches and the findings of the ongoing investigation.
