The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Wednesday took serious note of a comment made by Mallikarjun Kharge against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, following a formal complaint submitted by a high-level delegation of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
According to sources, the BJP delegation approached the poll body alleging that Kharge’s remarks were derogatory in nature and violated the spirit of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC), which governs political discourse during elections. The delegation urged the Commission to take strict action and ensure that decorum is maintained in public statements made by political leaders.
The ECI acknowledged receipt of the complaint and indicated that it would examine the matter in accordance with established procedures. Officials noted that any statement found to be in breach of the MCC could invite appropriate action, including advisories, warnings, or further punitive measures depending on the severity of the violation.
The controversy has added to the already charged political atmosphere, with both the ruling BJP and the opposition Congress engaging in sharp exchanges ahead of crucial electoral phases. While the Congress has not issued a detailed response to the complaint, party insiders suggested that the remarks were taken out of context and were part of broader political criticism.
The Model Code of Conduct, enforced by the ECI during election periods, lays down guidelines for political parties and candidates, emphasizing respectful discourse and prohibiting personal attacks. The Commission has, in the past, acted against leaders across party lines for violations, reinforcing its role as an impartial watchdog of India’s electoral process.
As the situation unfolds, all eyes will be on the Election Commission’s next steps, which are likely to set the tone for political campaigning in the coming days.
