EC Standoff Deepens: Rahul Gandhi Demands Answers, BJP Hits Back

The standoff between the Opposition and the Election Commission intensified on Tuesday as Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, along with several INDIA bloc MPs, remained at Akashvani Bhavan while seeking access to the Election Commission office. Rahul Gandhi accused the authorities of disrespecting elected MPs and reiterated his allegation of “vote chori”, saying the Opposition wanted to meet the Chief Election Commissioner to place its concerns directly before him. The BJP, however, rejected the allegations as politically motivated and accused the Opposition of attempting to undermine constitutional institutions after electoral defeats.

The political confrontation over electoral integrity escalated in Delhi on Tuesday as Opposition MPs, including Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, KC Venugopal, Pawan Khera and Deepender Hooda, remained near Akashvani Bhavan after being stopped from proceeding into the Election Commission premises.

Rahul Gandhi questioned why MPs were being prevented from entering the EC office when their stated objective was to meet the Chief Election Commissioner and present their concerns. He alleged that MPs had been “disrespected” and said the Opposition wanted to tell the Election Commission that it had committed “vote chori”.

Meanwhile, BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad sharply criticised the protest, accusing Rahul Gandhi and other INDIA bloc leaders of attempting to create an atmosphere of anarchy in a sensitive part of Delhi. He also alleged that the Opposition's criticism of electronic voting and its demand for ballot papers reflected an inability to accept electoral defeats.

Prasad went further, invoking the contentious history of booth capturing and alleging that a return to paper ballots could create opportunities for manipulation. His remarks underline the BJP's strategy of portraying the Opposition's electoral concerns not as institutional criticism but as an attempt to delegitimise technology and election outcomes.

Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan also attacked the INDIA bloc, saying the march reflected frustration over electoral defeats. He accused Opposition parties of making baseless allegations against constitutional institutions in an effort to damage their credibility.

The confrontation highlights a widening trust deficit between the Opposition and the Election Commission. For the Opposition, the issue is about transparency, accountability and confidence in the electoral process. For the BJP, the repeated allegations amount to an attempt to cast doubt on institutions whenever election results go against the Opposition.
