External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar on Monday expressed gratitude to the government and people of Armenia for assisting in the safe evacuation of more than 550 Indian nationals from Iran amid escalating tensions in West Asia.
In a message shared on social media platform X, Jaishankar thanked Armenia for facilitating the transit and safe movement of Indian citizens who had been stranded in Iran due to the deteriorating security situation in the region. “Thank the Government and the people of Armenia for facilitating the safe evacuation of over 550 Indian nationals from Iran so far. Appreciate their support in these challenging times,” he said.
The evacuation operation forms part of India’s broader efforts to ensure the safety of its citizens abroad as tensions continue to rise in West Asia. According to officials, the evacuated Indians were assisted by Indian diplomatic missions in the region, which coordinated their movement from Iran to neighbouring Armenia before arranging their return to India.
Government sources said that the majority of the evacuees crossed into Armenia through land routes with the support of local authorities and Indian embassy officials. From there, arrangements were made for their onward travel to India on commercial flights and special travel arrangements.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has been closely monitoring the evolving situation in the region and has been working with neighbouring countries to facilitate safe transit corridors for Indian citizens. Officials noted that diplomatic coordination with partner nations has played a key role in ensuring the smooth evacuation process.
The evacuation also reflects India’s growing diplomatic engagement with countries in the region, including Armenia, which has emerged as an important transit point for Indians leaving Iran during the ongoing crisis.
With several thousand Indian nationals still present in Iran, the Indian government continues to urge citizens to remain in contact with the Indian Embassy and follow official advisories while further evacuation arrangements are being coordinated.
