DRI Smashes Gold Smuggling Syndicate, Arrests 11 and Seizes Gold Worth ₹15 Crore

DRI Smashes Gold Smuggling Syndicate, Arrests 11 and Seizes Gold Worth ₹15 Crore

In a significant crackdown on organized crime, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has dismantled a major gold smuggling syndicate operating in Mumbai, arresting 11 individuals and seizing a substantial haul of contraband precious metals.

The operation led to the seizure of 11.88 kilograms of gold, valued at approximately ₹15 crore, along with 8.77 kilograms of silver worth ₹13.77 lakh. The bust underscores the persistent challenges and sophisticated methods employed by smuggling networks to evade customs duties and infiltrate the Indian market.

The breakthrough came after the DRI, the premier agency under the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) for tackling smuggling, developed specific intelligence. Information indicated that two premises in the densely populated commercial areas of Kalbadevi and Mazgaon were being used as covert workshops for melting and processing smuggled gold.

According to officials, the syndicate's modus operandi involved importing gold in a crude or semi-finished form, often concealed in legal cargo or through illicit channels. This gold would then be taken to these discreet locations to be melted, refined, and stamped to blend seamlessly with legitimately sourced gold in the market.

"The melted and processed gold was being systematically disposed of in the local market through trading activities conducted from an office located on Mumbadevi Road," a DRI official stated.

Acting swiftly on the intelligence, DRI teams conducted simultaneous raids at the three identified premises—the two processing units in Kalbadevi and Mazgaon, and the trading office on Mumbadevi Road. The searches resulted in the dramatic recovery of the smuggled gold and silver, leading to the immediate arrest of the 11 accused, who are believed to be core members of the syndicate.

"The investigation in this case is at a very crucial stage as the DRI is making an all-out effort to locate the other members of the syndicate," the official added, hinting at the likelihood of more arrests as the probe deepens.

The operation highlights the DRI's continued focus on disrupting the financial networks that fuel smuggling activities. By targeting not just the couriers but the entire chain—from processing to final sale—the agency aims to deliver a crippling blow to the economic viability of such syndicates.

This seizure is one of the largest in recent months and deals a significant setback to the illegal gold trade, which causes a substantial loss to the national exchequer in unpaid customs duties and taxes. The DRI has reiterated its commitment to rooting out such smuggling networks and ensuring the security of the country's economic frontiers.
