Delhi Police Issues New Guidelines to Boost Visibility, Public Safety and Traffic Management

Acting on directions from Delhi Lieutenant Governor TS Sandhu to enhance police visibility, strengthen public safety and improve traffic management across the national capital, the Delhi Police Commissioner on Saturday issued a comprehensive circular outlining new operational guidelines for senior officers and field personnel.

The directives, issued following a recent meeting between the Lieutenant Governor, the Commissioner of Police and other senior officials, aim to promote visible policing, improve police-public interaction and communication, and ensure better traffic regulation across the city. The initiative is also intended to address local issues promptly, including the removal of temporary roadblocks, illegal encroachments and other obstacles affecting public convenience.

The Lieutenant Governor has consistently stressed that visible, proactive and interactive policing serves as one of the most effective deterrents against crime and traffic violations. Since assuming office, he has repeatedly advocated greater police presence on the streets to enhance public confidence and improve law enforcement outcomes.

The circular, addressed to all Special Commissioners of Police, Joint Commissioners of Police and Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCPs), mandates joint foot patrolling by district and traffic police officers every Saturday and Sunday, along with two additional days each week. The additional days will be determined by district DCPs in consultation with Joint Commissioners of Police and range officers.

According to the guidelines, the joint foot patrols will be conducted for three hours from 5 pm to 8 pm. During this period, DCPs, Additional DCPs and ACPs from both district police and traffic units will be required to remain in the field. The exercise has been designated as compulsory field duty and is not to be treated as a routine administrative formality.

The circular states that the objective is to strengthen visible policing, ensure direct public engagement, improve traffic regulation, remove temporary encroachments and obstructions, and resolve local issues through immediate intervention on the ground.

To ensure effective implementation, officers have been instructed to avoid scheduling office work, meetings, conferences or indoor review sessions during the designated patrolling hours as far as possible. The entire period is to be devoted exclusively to field presence, public interaction, on-the-spot supervision and immediate corrective action.
