Delhi-NCR Gets Respite from Heatwave as Rain, Dust Storms Lash Region

Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) witnessed a dramatic change in weather on Tuesday as strong dust storms, thunderstorms, and light rainfall swept across several areas, bringing much-needed relief from the prevailing heatwave conditions. The sudden weather activity affected Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, and adjoining regions, leading the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a red alert and warn residents to remain cautious.

The weather department reported that the region was experiencing an intense pre-monsoon spell marked by powerful dust storms and rapidly changing atmospheric conditions. According to the IMD, strong winds gusting up to 100 kilometres per hour were expected to continue for the next hour across parts of Delhi-NCR, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and intermittent rainfall.

Dark clouds engulfed the sky in several parts of the capital, significantly reducing visibility as dust-laden winds swept through roads and residential areas. The sudden change in weather led to a noticeable drop in temperatures, offering relief to residents who had been enduring scorching heat and high humidity over the past several days.

Meteorologists attributed the weather disturbance to strong pre-monsoon activity triggered by moisture-laden winds and atmospheric instability over northwestern India. Such conditions are common during the transition period before the arrival of the southwest monsoon, often resulting in intense but short-lived thunderstorms and dust storms.

The IMD advised people to stay indoors during periods of severe weather, avoid taking shelter under trees, and remain alert to possible disruptions caused by strong winds. Authorities also warned of the potential for damage to temporary structures, uprooting of trees, traffic disruptions, and localised power outages.

In Noida and Ghaziabad, gusty winds and dust storms were followed by light showers in several localities. Commuters faced difficulties due to reduced visibility and flying debris, while emergency services remained on alert to respond to any weather-related incidents.

The weather department indicated that intermittent rain and thunderstorm activity could continue over parts of Delhi-NCR during the evening, helping to moderate temperatures further. The fresh spell of rain is expected to provide temporary relief from the heatwave, while also signalling the gradual advancement of monsoon conditions across northern India.

As weather conditions remain volatile, residents have been urged to monitor official forecasts and advisories issued by the IMD and local authorities. The department continues to closely track the evolving weather system and has advised people to take necessary precautions until conditions stabilize.
