After enduring several days of scorching heat and rising temperatures, residents of New Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) finally experienced much-needed relief on Saturday as rain and strong winds swept across the region. The sudden change in weather brought down temperatures significantly, offering comfort to millions struggling under harsh summer conditions.
The day had begun with bright sunshine and humid weather, continuing the uncomfortable conditions that had persisted throughout the week. However, by afternoon, dark clouds gathered over many parts of the capital, signaling a dramatic shift in the atmosphere. Soon, light to moderate rainfall lashed several areas of Delhi-NCR, accompanied by gusty winds that cooled the region and improved overall weather conditions.
For the past several days, Delhi had been reeling under severe heatwave conditions. Temperatures consistently crossed the 43-degree Celsius mark, making daily life difficult for commuters, outdoor workers and residents alike. The intense heat had also increased electricity consumption and water demand across the city.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), heatwave-like conditions were observed on Friday in parts of Delhi, Haryana and Punjab. The Safdarjung weather station, which serves as the official benchmark for Delhi’s weather readings, recorded a maximum temperature of 43.3 degrees Celsius on Friday. This was more than three degrees above the seasonal average. The minimum temperature settled at 29.3 degrees Celsius, indicating little nighttime relief from the oppressive heat.
Other weather stations across Delhi also recorded extremely high temperatures. The Ridge area touched 44.4 degrees Celsius, while Palam, Lodhi Road and Ayanagar all reported temperatures above 43 degrees Celsius. The continuous spell of extreme heat had led authorities to advise people to avoid unnecessary outdoor exposure during peak afternoon hours.
The IMD had earlier predicted rainfall and strong surface winds in parts of Delhi-NCR due to pre-monsoon activity developing over northern India. Saturday’s rainfall validated those forecasts and brought immediate respite to residents exhausted by the prolonged heatwave.
The sudden weather change also affected traffic movement in some areas as rainwater accumulated briefly on roads. However, many residents welcomed the rain despite minor inconveniences, with parks, streets and markets witnessing people enjoying the cooler weather after days of relentless heat.
Weather experts believe the changing atmospheric conditions may signal the gradual beginning of pre-monsoon activity in north India. According to Mahesh Palawat of Skymet Weather, pre-monsoon developments are expected to intensify from early June onwards. These developments could help reduce the severity of heatwaves in the coming weeks and bring more frequent spells of rain and thunderstorms.
Meteorologists say that while the monsoon is still some time away from reaching Delhi, intermittent rain and cloud cover over the next few days may provide temporary relief from extreme temperatures. Cloudy skies and scattered rainfall are likely to continue in parts of the NCR region, helping stabilize weather conditions.
The rain has not only improved comfort levels but also boosted hopes for a smoother transition into the monsoon season. For now, Delhi residents are enjoying the welcome break from the punishing summer heat that had gripped the city for days.
