Delhi-NCR Gets Rain Relief as IMD Sounds Orange Alert for Thunderstorms and Hailstorms

After days of scorching temperatures and humid conditions, parts of Delhi-NCR received light rainfall on Thursday evening, bringing much-needed relief to residents from the intense summer heat. The sudden change in weather led to a noticeable drop in temperature across several areas of the national capital and adjoining regions.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Delhi-NCR and nearby areas, warning of moderate to severe thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, strong winds, dust storms, and isolated hailstorms over the next two days.

In a nowcast warning posted on social media platform X, the IMD stated that intense thunderstorm activity was developing over several parts of South Haryana and adjoining Delhi-NCR regions. According to the weather department, wind speeds could reach up to 80 kilometres per hour, with the possibility of hail and dust storms affecting several districts.

The IMD further predicted light to moderate rainfall across Delhi, Gurugram, Noida, Ghaziabad, Faridabad, and surrounding areas. Officials said the weather system is expected to intensify on Friday and remain active till Saturday before gradually shifting towards Gujarat by Saturday evening or Sunday.

Weather experts believe the current spell of pre-monsoon activity could be stronger than previous showers witnessed in Delhi earlier this month and in April. According to Skymet weather expert Mahesh Palawat, thunderstorm activity had already started over northern Rajasthan and was expected to spread across Delhi by evening and continue throughout the night.

He added that the ongoing weather system is likely to trigger widespread rainfall activity across the national capital region, bringing significant respite from the prevailing heatwave-like conditions.

Meanwhile, the changing weather has also impacted air travel operations in the capital. Delhi Airport issued a weather advisory warning passengers that thunderstorms and adverse weather conditions may affect flight schedules. Airport authorities said ground teams are coordinating closely with airlines and other stakeholders to minimise disruptions and ensure smooth passenger movement.

Passengers have been advised to stay in contact with their respective airlines for real-time flight updates before leaving for the airport. Travellers were also encouraged to use alternative transport options such as the Delhi Metro to avoid delays caused by heavy traffic congestion and poor weather conditions.

The sudden spell of rain and thunderstorms has brought temporary relief to Delhiites, but authorities have urged people to remain cautious due to the possibility of strong winds, lightning strikes, and hailstorms in the coming days.
