Delhi-NCR Gets Monsoon Relief as IMD Issues Red Alert for Heavy Rain and Thunderstorms

Residents of Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) woke up to a refreshing change in weather on Tuesday as widespread rain and thunderstorms brought much-needed relief from the intense heat and humidity that had gripped the region over the past several days. While the showers lowered temperatures and improved comfort levels, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that the wet spell is far from over, issuing a Red Alert for heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds.

According to the IMD, several parts of Delhi-NCR experienced moderate rainfall accompanied by gusty winds, providing a welcome break from the sweltering conditions. The weather department has predicted that rain activity will continue throughout the day, with another spell of showers likely during the night. Temperatures are expected to remain between 32°C and 37°C over the coming days, significantly lower than the scorching highs recorded before the arrival of the monsoon showers.

Red Alert Across Delhi-NCR

The IMD's district-wise forecast indicates that weather conditions will remain largely uniform across all 15 districts of Delhi and the adjoining NCR regions. This includes North Delhi, South Delhi, Central Delhi, East Delhi, West Delhi, New Delhi, North West Delhi, North East Delhi, South West Delhi, South East Delhi, Shahdara, as well as NCR districts such as Faridabad, Gurugram, Noida, and Ghaziabad.

For July 7, the weather department has issued a Red Alert, forecasting moderate rainfall at many places and heavy rainfall at isolated locations. The showers are expected to be accompanied by thunderstorms, frequent lightning, and strong winds reaching speeds of up to 70 kmph, raising concerns over traffic disruptions, waterlogging, falling trees, and damage to weak structures.

Authorities have advised residents to remain cautious while commuting and avoid taking shelter under trees or near electric poles during thunderstorms.

Rain to Continue Over the Next Few Days

The IMD has predicted that similar weather conditions will persist over the next several days.

On July 8, Delhi-NCR is likely to witness light rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds, particularly during the afternoon hours.

For July 9, light to moderate rain is expected at isolated places during the morning and forenoon, along with thunderstorms and strong winds. Another spell of very light to light rainfall is likely during the night.

The intensity of rainfall is expected to reduce from July 10 and July 11, when the warning level has been downgraded to Green, indicating no significant weather warning. However, the sky is expected to remain generally cloudy, with chances of light rain, thunderstorms, and lightning during the forenoon and afternoon on both days.

The IMD has classified the probability of rainfall over the next five days as "Likely," indicating a 25 to 50 percent chance of occurrence.

Monsoon Advances Across India

The latest spell of rain in Delhi comes as the Southwest Monsoon continues to make steady progress across the country. According to the IMD, the monsoon advanced further into parts of Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Haryana on Tuesday. Meteorologists expect it to cover the remaining parts of the country within the next two to three days, marking the full onset of the monsoon season across India.

The advancement of the monsoon is expected to improve rainfall distribution in several northern and western states, benefiting agriculture, replenishing reservoirs, and easing the prolonged heatwave conditions experienced in recent weeks.

Relief with a Word of Caution

While the rain has brought welcome respite from oppressive weather conditions, it also poses challenges for urban infrastructure. Waterlogging, traffic congestion, and localized flooding remain concerns in several low-lying areas of Delhi-NCR during periods of intense rainfall.

Officials have urged citizens to stay updated with weather advisories, plan travel carefully, and exercise caution during thunderstorms and high winds. As the monsoon strengthens its grip over northern India, residents can look forward to cooler weather, though intermittent heavy showers are likely to remain a part of daily life over the coming days.
