Delhi Hit by Powerful Dust Storms, Thunderstorms and Rain Showers as IMD Issues Red Alert

Strong dust storms and gusty winds swept across several parts of Delhi on Saturday evening, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue red and orange alerts for severe weather conditions across the national capital. The weather department warned residents to brace for intense thunderstorms, lightning, hail and rainfall as a powerful weather system moved over the region.

According to the IMD, a dust storm followed by a severe thunderstorm is likely to affect central, northeast, southwest, west, northwest and north Delhi. The department forecast light to moderate rainfall accompanied by lightning and hail, with wind speeds ranging between 70 and 90 kilometres per hour and gusts reaching up to 100 kilometres per hour in some areas.

Several districts, including New Delhi and Shahdara, are expected to experience moderate thunderstorms with lightning and rain. Winds in these regions are likely to blow at speeds of 40 to 60 kilometres per hour, with gusts touching 80 kilometres per hour. Parts of south Delhi may also receive light rainfall.

The sudden deterioration in weather comes after days of intense heat and uncomfortable conditions in the city. Earlier in the day, Delhi recorded a minimum temperature of 24.6 degrees Celsius, which was two degrees below the seasonal average. The maximum temperature was expected to remain around 36 degrees Celsius, considerably lower than the temperatures witnessed earlier this week.

Meteorologists attributed the abrupt change in weather to an active western disturbance affecting northwest India, along with an associated cyclonic circulation. These systems have increased moisture levels and atmospheric instability over the region, creating favourable conditions for thunderstorms, strong winds and rainfall.

The IMD has urged residents to exercise caution during the storm. People have been advised to remain indoors whenever possible, avoid taking shelter under trees, stay away from weak or temporary structures and unplug electrical appliances to reduce the risk of damage from lightning strikes.

The weather department has also placed Delhi under a yellow alert for Sunday, indicating the possibility of continued thunderstorms, gusty winds and rainfall. Forecasts suggest that maximum temperatures may remain between 34 and 36 degrees Celsius, providing temporary relief from the prevailing summer heat.

While the stormy conditions may disrupt transportation and outdoor activities, they are expected to bring much-needed respite from the scorching temperatures that have gripped the capital in recent days. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and have advised citizens to stay updated with official weather bulletins and safety advisories.
