The Delhi High Court on Monday issued a notice to the Centre after members and staff of the Gymkhana Club challenged a show-cause notice issued by the government seeking the club's eviction from its premises.
The petition was filed by long-standing club member Vijay Khurana along with the Gymkhana Club Staff Welfare Association. The plea questions the legality of the show-cause notice and seeks judicial intervention against the proposed eviction.
During the hearing, the Centre, represented by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, sought time to file its response to the petition. Mehta informed the court that the show-cause notice requires a representative of the club to appear before the Estate Officer on or before July 7.
The development comes barely a month after the Centre had assured the Delhi High Court that any action to evict the prestigious Lutyens' Delhi-based club would be undertaken strictly in accordance with the law and only after issuing prior notice.
Taking note of the submissions, the High Court issued notice to the Centre and listed the matter for further hearing on July 28.
The case is expected to focus on the legality of the eviction proceedings and whether due process has been followed by the authorities.
This is a breaking news story and will be updated as more details emerge.
