Vijender Gupta, Speaker of the Delhi Legislative Assembly, has been granted Z-category security cover following a string of bomb threat emails and a recent security breach that raised serious concerns over safety at the Assembly complex.
According to officials, the decision was taken after six to seven threatening emails were received by the Assembly Secretariat and the Speaker’s office since the budget session commenced on March 23. The repeated threats prompted authorities to significantly upgrade security protocols for the Speaker and the premises.
Under the Z-category security arrangement, Gupta will now receive round-the-clock protection from a specialised security team. The cover also includes a dedicated escort vehicle and heightened surveillance measures to ensure his safety amid the ongoing threats.
The move comes close on the heels of a startling breach at the Assembly complex in New Delhi. In the incident, an unidentified man reportedly drove his vehicle past the boundary gate, entered the premises, placed a bouquet and garland near the Speaker’s office, and left without immediate interception.
The episode exposed gaps in the existing security system and triggered an urgent review by authorities.
In response, security at the Assembly complex is being strengthened in coordination with multiple agencies, including the Delhi Police and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).
Officials said a comprehensive, multi-layered security grid is being put in place. Measures include increasing the number of personnel at all entry points, deploying mobile patrol units, and installing hydraulic road blockers to prevent unauthorised vehicle access.
A unified command structure is also being established to ensure swift response and better coordination among security agencies.
Emphasising a zero-tolerance approach to security lapses, Gupta has directed strict enforcement of access control measures within the Assembly premises.
“No vehicle should be permitted entry into the Assembly premises under any circumstance without proper security clearance,” he said, underscoring the seriousness of the situation.
He further instructed that all entry and exit gates be reinforced with stronger infrastructure and tighter protocols. Each gate will be manned by at least two personnel drawn from the Delhi Police and the CRPF to maintain coordinated vigilance.
Additionally, a dedicated mobile patrol vehicle capable of rapid intervention has been ordered to be deployed within the complex.
Authorities maintain that these steps are aimed at preventing any recurrence of such incidents and ensuring the safety of legislators, staff, and visitors. The developments underscore growing concerns over security threats to key public institutions and the need for constant vigilance in high-profile government establishments.
