The Congress government in Karnataka appears headed for a major leadership transition, with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah likely to resign from his post following directions from the party high command. The development marks a significant political shift in the three-year-old Congress administration and paves the way for Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar to take over as the next Chief Minister of the state.
According to party sources, Siddaramaiah is expected to meet the Governor today and formally tender his resignation. The veteran Congress leader reportedly informed Cabinet colleagues about his decision during a breakfast meeting attended by senior ministers and DK Shivakumar. During the interaction, Siddaramaiah is said to have conveyed that the Congress leadership wants him to move to national politics and relinquish the Chief Minister’s post.
The transition comes after intense consultations within the Congress leadership in New Delhi. Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar were summoned to the national capital on Tuesday, where they held a series of meetings with senior party leaders, including Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, party General Secretary KC Venugopal, and Karnataka in-charge Randeep Singh Surjewala.
Sources indicate that the Congress high command has offered Siddaramaiah a larger organisational role at the national level along with a Rajya Sabha seat. However, reports suggest that the outgoing Chief Minister has not immediately accepted the proposal. Political observers believe Siddaramaiah’s decision to step down gained momentum after direct communication from Rahul Gandhi, whom the Karnataka leader has repeatedly said he would obey on matters concerning leadership change.
The Congress leadership has deputed Randeep Singh Surjewala and KC Venugopal to Bengaluru to oversee the transition process and ensure a smooth transfer of power. Their presence underlines the importance the party attaches to maintaining unity within the Karnataka unit during the leadership reshuffle.
The anticipated elevation of DK Shivakumar comes after years of speculation over a power-sharing arrangement within the Karnataka Congress. Shivakumar, widely regarded as one of the principal architects of the Congress victory in the 2023 Assembly elections, has long been seen as a strong contender for the Chief Minister’s post. His supporters within the party have consistently pushed for his elevation, while Siddaramaiah has remained the dominant administrative face of the government.
The possible change in leadership is expected to have a major impact on Karnataka politics and the Congress party’s strategy ahead of upcoming electoral battles. While the Congress leadership hopes the transition will strengthen the party both in the state and nationally, the challenge will be to maintain factional balance and avoid internal dissent.
As political activity intensifies in Bengaluru, all eyes are now on the Governor’s office and the Congress Legislature Party, which is expected to formally endorse the leadership change once Siddaramaiah submits his resignation.
