Congress Backs Vijay’s TVK Government Bid in Tamil Nadu, Sets Condition to Exclude “Communal Forces”

In a significant political development following the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, the Indian National Congress has extended its support to actor-turned-politician Vijay and his newly formed party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, to form the next government in the state. However, the Congress has attached a crucial condition: the alliance must exclude any “communal forces” that do not adhere to the values of the Constitution of India.

The announcement came through a statement issued by Girish Chodankar, representing the All India Congress Committee (AICC). He confirmed that both the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee and the Congress Legislative Party (CLP) have unanimously decided to offer full support to the TVK.

“Our support shall be conditional upon the TVK keeping out from this alliance any communal forces that do not believe in the Constitution of India,” the statement emphasized, underlining the Congress party’s ideological stance on secularism.

Vijay’s TVK has made an impressive electoral debut, securing 107 seats in the 234-member Assembly. With the addition of Congress’s five MLAs, the tally rises to 112—still short of the majority mark of 118. To bridge this gap, Vijay has reportedly initiated talks with like-minded parties such as the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), Communist Party of India, and Communist Party of India (Marxist).

If these parties lend their support, the alliance could reach 119 seats—just enough to cross the majority threshold and establish a stable government.

The Congress also indicated that this partnership goes beyond immediate government formation. The statement highlighted a long-term vision of collaboration in future elections, including local body polls, Lok Sabha, and Rajya Sabha contests. It described the alliance as one rooted in “mutual respect and shared responsibility.”

In a joint message reflecting optimism and unity, Vijay and Rahul Gandhi pledged to honor the people’s mandate for a “secular and progressive government.” They emphasized their commitment to fulfilling the aspirations of the जनता, particularly the youth of Tamil Nadu.

As political negotiations continue, all eyes are now on whether Vijay can secure the remaining support needed to transform his electoral success into a governing mandate.
