In a tragic incident following heavy rains in Mumbai, a three-storey building suddenly collapsed in Shahbaz Village, Navi Mumbai. The ground-plus-three structure housed a total of 24 families. Prompt responses from police, fire, and NDRF teams are currently underway as rescue efforts continue at the site.
Navi Mumbai Municipal Commissioner Kailash Shinde reported, "Around 5 AM today, this building collapsed. It was a ground-plus-three floors structure located in Sector-19, Shahbaz Village. 52 people were safely evacuated, while 2 individuals were rescued from the debris. There is a possibility of 2 more people being trapped. NDRF teams are actively involved in the rescue operation. The two rescued individuals are hospitalized and are in stable condition. The building, which is about 10 years old, is under investigation, and appropriate action will be taken against those found responsible."
This incident comes shortly after another building collapse last week near Mumbai's Grant Road railway station, where a balcony and slab from the third and fourth floors of the four-storey Rubina Manzil collapsed around 11 AM. Mumbai Fire Brigade confirmed that CCTV footage showed a woman stepping out of her home when debris fell on her, leading to her death. Immediate rescue operations using specialized equipment managed to save several lives.
Mumbai Fire Brigade deployed four fire engines, a Quick Response Vehicle (QRV), a Rescue Vehicle (RV), and a Turntable Ladder (TTL) at the scene. Authorities also mobilized police, ambulance services, and ward employees to assist in rescue and relief efforts. So far, 13 individuals have been rescued by the fire brigade, while Bhatia Hospital has confirmed treating four injured individuals, with one woman pronounced dead upon arrival.
As investigations into both incidents continue, questions about building safety and maintenance standards in Mumbai remain at the forefront of public concern.
