BRO constructs road using steel and plastic waste under Waste to Wealth and ‘Save Earth” Initiatives

The Department of Defence is into the third week of the implementation phase (02-31 Oct, 2023) of the Special Campaign 3.0 along with the concomitant Swachhata Abhiyan.  As part of the best practices deployed during the ongoing Campaign , Border Roads Organization (BRO) has constructed a road using steel slag, a waste by-product of steel manufacturing. A one km long Joram-Koloriang Road in Arunachal Pradesh has been constructed using 1200 MT steel slag as part of Waste to Wealth Initiative.

Alive to the call to “Save Earth”, BRO has also taken initiative for development of road infrastructure using plastic waste in the high altitude  area of Sanku at Ladakh,  which makes roads more durable, cost effective and environment-friendly.

It is worth mentioning here that India's Border Road Organisation (BRO) -- that develops and maintains road networks in border areas and friendly neighboring countries -- had earlier last year carried out trials to extensively use shredded plastic in road construction in India as well as in Bhutan.

The BRO has used the technology in restoring more than 13 km of border roads, a press release from the Ministry of Defence stated. It included 4.5 km on Phuentsholing-Thimphu Road in Bhutan, 2.5 km on Balipara-Charduar-Tawang road and 1 km on Roing-Koronu-Paya road in Arunachal Pradesh. Plastic has also been used to resurface 5.22 km on Hnathial-Sangau-Saiha Road in Mizoram and 2 km on Hapoli-Sarli-Huri Road in Arunachal Pradesh.
