Is Congress depending on borrowed players in UP assembly election? This is the question disturbing the true Congress leaders of UP and that of the Centre too. Congress has set up a seven-member Screening Committee under the chairmanship of Mohan Prakash. The other members are party president of the state, Rita Bahuguna Joshi, Pramod Tiwari, Madhusudan Mistry, Bhakta Charan Das and Parvez Hashmi. It is important to note that leaving Pramod Tiwari, all the members of the committee, including its chairman are those who are not originally from Congress. They were earlier in different parties and joined Congress later. This has stirred a fresh wave of dissatisfaction among the true party leaders and cadres.
Obstinate Congress
The second term of the UPA government is not going well, as the Congress-ruled states are creating troubles for the Congress party. The latest example is Rajasthan where two incidents have shaken the government’s roots. One is the abduction, rape and murder case of Bhanwari Devi, and second is massacre of the minority community in Bharatpur. The Congress government in Rajasthan is under tremendous pressure on these two issues. However, the Congress leaders are least bothered about it. Senior party leader from the state and former president of NCW, Girija Vyas recently commented lightly in an informal discussion that these issues were like khujli (itching) and didn’t pose any threat to the party’s position. Vyas now edits congress journal Congress Sandesh.
Haven For Criminals?
Though Ramesh Pokhariyal Nishank was replaced as Chief Minister by Maj Gen (Retd) BC Khanduri due to corruption charges, it has not deterred other criminal elements from hijacking the party at local levels. The newly appointed district president of an important district Haridwar, Sushil Chauhan, is a known history-sheeter. After his appointment, the SSP, Haridwar, has written a letter to the state Home Secretary asking him to instruct how he should act if the person sitting on the stage with CM on his probable visit to Haridwar, is a wellknown history-sheeter. It is said that CM Khanduri has replied this letter that he will not visit Haridwar till elections. It is noteworthy that there are more than 25 charges against Chauhan including under Sections 302 and 307.
Similarly, state BJP has almost cleared the joining of a Congress rebel from Laksar, Kunwar Pranav Singh, who is also a sitting MLA. He recently shot the grandson of the owner of Polaris Hotel, Roorkee, who happens to be a relative of former RSS chief Rajju Bhaiya. But before he was arrested, CM Khanduri ordered a separate inquiry and he got time. It is said that both Chauhan and Kunvar have strong backing of a central BJP leader.
Politics Of Money
Sandeep Dikshit, son of Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, it is said, wants to shift his political base from Delhi to Bhopal. That is why he is spending most of his time in Bhopal nowadays. It is said that he spends almost two weeks in Bhopal every month. A lot of money is being spent on making necessary arrangements. And the money found in a coach of the train Bhopal Express was also reportedly a part of that. Sources said that the amount of money found in a bag was more than two crore. However, when the bag was found by the coach attendant Dikshit successfully handled the situation and it was announced that the bag contained just ten lakh rupees.
