BJP Targets Rahul Gandhi Over Protests, Says Supreme Court Notice Does Not Endorse Conduct

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday, October 15, launched a sharp attack on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, accusing him of undermining constitutional institutions and encouraging disorder in the name of political protest. BJP national spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia described the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha as a “symbol of anarchy in Indian democracy” following proceedings in the Supreme Court concerning petitions linked to political leaders’ conduct.

Addressing a press conference, Bhatia criticised Rahul Gandhi’s political approach and questioned his conduct as the Leader of the Opposition. He alleged that the Congress leader’s actions were weakening respect for constitutional institutions and promoting confrontation under the banner of democratic protest.

The BJP spokesperson’s remarks came after the Supreme Court issued notices on the petitions before it. However, the court clarified that issuing notices did not amount to condoning the conduct of the political leaders concerned. The distinction is significant, as the procedural decision to seek responses to a petition should not be interpreted as an endorsement of the allegations or the actions under scrutiny.

“I will speak about it factually,” Bhatia said, referring to the Supreme Court proceedings. He claimed that Rahul Gandhi’s conduct had raised questions about his understanding of constitutional responsibilities and the standards expected of a senior opposition leader.

Bhatia also made strong personal criticisms of Gandhi, describing him as “anarchist, immature, irresponsible, and constitutionally illiterate.” He further claimed that many people viewed Gandhi’s position as Leader of the Opposition as unfortunate for the country.

The BJP’s attack reflects the continuing political confrontation between the ruling party and the Congress over protests and the functioning of constitutional institutions. While the opposition has used demonstrations and public campaigns to challenge the government and raise questions about institutional decisions, the BJP has argued that political disagreement must remain within constitutional boundaries.
