A delegation of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), comprising senior leaders including Nirmala Sitharaman, Kiren Rijiju, Arjun Ram Meghwal, and Arun Singh, on Wednesday approached the Election Commission of India over alleged derogatory remarks made by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The BJP leaders urged the Commission to take strict action against Kharge and demanded that he apologise to the nation for his comments. Speaking to the media after the meeting, Kiren Rijiju described the use of such language in political discourse as “despicable” and harmful to democratic values.
Rijiju stated that the delegation conveyed to the Commission that derogatory remarks by leaders of any political party weaken the democratic fabric of the country. He emphasized that accountability must be ensured, especially when such statements come from someone holding a high office within a major political party.
“The use of such language is unacceptable and undermines the dignity of democratic debate,” Rijiju said, adding that the BJP expects firm and appropriate action from the poll body.
According to him, the Election Commission assured the delegation that it would examine the complaint and take necessary action in accordance with established norms.
Echoing similar concerns, Nirmala Sitharaman noted that the delegation highlighted before the Commission that the remarks came from the President of the Congress party, making the issue more serious. She alleged that the Congress has shown a recurring pattern of using objectionable language against Prime Minister Modi.
The development marks yet another escalation in the ongoing war of words between the BJP and the Indian National Congress, reflecting the increasingly sharp tone of political exchanges ahead of key electoral contests. The Election Commission’s response in the coming days will be closely watched as it weighs the complaint and determines whether the remarks violated the Model Code of Conduct or other provisions governing political conduct.
