Bihar Cabinet Expansion: Chief Minister Nitish Kumar Inducts Seven New Ministers Ahead of Elections

On Wednesday, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar of Bihar expanded his council of ministers by inducting seven new faces, all from the alliance partner BJP, bringing the total to 36 ministers, the maximum allowed in the state's 243-member assembly. The oath of office was administered by Governor Arif Mohammad Khan, setting the stage as Bihar gears up for elections later this year.

The new ministers represent a strategic move by the ruling coalition, aimed at bolstering support and optimizing regional representation. Among the notable inductees is Jibesh Kumar, a former member of the state Cabinet until 2022, when he parted ways with the NDA coalition over differences with the BJP. His return marks a significant realignment within the alliance.

Sanjay Saraogi, a veteran fifth-term MLA from Darbhanga, and Sunil Kumar, a three-time MLA from Bihar Sharif in Nalanda district, also join the cabinet ranks, underlining the BJP's strengthened presence in key constituencies. Raju Kumar Singh, formerly associated with the Vikassheel Insan Party (VIP), now brings his influence from Sahebganj in Muzaffarpur to the BJP fold, further consolidating the coalition's electoral strategy.

Krishna Kumar Mantu, known for his recent efforts to mobilize the Kurmi community through the "Kurmi Chetna Rally" in Patna, reinforces the JD(U)'s outreach to its traditional OBC support base. The cabinet expansion also includes Vijay Kumar Mandal from Sikti in Araria district and Moti Lal Prasad from Riga in Sitamarhi, strategically selected to enhance representation from regions where the NDA has historically performed well.

The timing of this expansion, following a crucial meeting chaired by the BJP's national president, underscores a calculated approach to consolidate support ahead of the upcoming elections. The inclusion of ministers from diverse backgrounds and regional affiliations aims to broaden the coalition's electoral appeal across Bihar.

This development comes amidst political maneuvering, exemplified by the resignation of state BJP president Dilip Jaiswal from his cabinet post, adhering to the party's "one person, one post" policy. The strategic realignment and expansion of Bihar's cabinet reflect the dynamic electoral landscape as parties prepare for the upcoming polls.

As the political climate intensifies, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's latest cabinet reshuffle is poised to influence Bihar's electoral dynamics, setting the stage for a competitive contest in the state assembly elections later this year.
