Bengal By-elections Deliver Major Boost to BJP; TVK Advances in Tamil Nadu

The latest round of by-elections has delivered significant political signals across several states, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) recording a spectacular victory in West Bengal’s Nandigram and establishing a commanding lead in Assam’s Nagaon Lok Sabha constituency. Hasin Rani Rath’s emphatic win in Nandigram, by a margin exceeding 1.22 lakh votes, underlined the BJP’s electoral strength in a constituency that has become a symbol of the state’s larger political contest. Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu’s ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) made encouraging gains in two Assembly seats, while Puducherry’s ruling AINRC retained its constituency, highlighting the diverse political currents shaping India’s regional electoral landscape.

The BJP registered a sweeping victory in West Bengal’s Nandigram Assembly constituency on Friday, with its candidate Hasin Rani Rath defeating Congress leader Milan Pradhan by a staggering margin of 1,22,753 votes. Rath secured 1,64,427 votes, accounting for approximately 75 per cent of the total votes recorded for the leading candidates, while Pradhan received 41,674 votes, according to Election Commission of India data.

The result represents more than a routine by-election victory. Nandigram occupies a special place in Bengal’s political history, having emerged as a defining battleground in the confrontation between the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the BJP. Its electoral significance extends beyond the constituency, making every major contest here a potential indicator of broader political sentiment.

The developments in Rejinagar, where BJP candidate Shankharavh Sarkar was reported to be leading with 1,29,914 votes, further drew attention to the party’s performance in the state’s by-elections. Sarkar’s reported lead of 75,816 votes over his nearest rival suggested a strong showing, although the final outcome would be necessary to establish the full electoral picture.

The Nandigram result, in particular, will be closely examined by political parties seeking to understand the changing preferences of Bengal’s electorate. For the BJP, a victory of this magnitude offers an opportunity to project organisational strength and reinforce the argument that it remains a formidable challenger in the state.

However, by-election results should not automatically be treated as a prediction of future statewide outcomes. Constituency-specific factors, candidate selection, local alliances, voter mobilisation and the political circumstances surrounding each contest can significantly influence the result.

For the Congress, the Nandigram defeat presents a difficult challenge. The party must confront the question of whether it can rebuild its organisational presence and recover voter confidence in a state where it has struggled to compete consistently with the principal political forces.

In Assam, BJP candidate Devasish Sharma established a commanding lead over All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) chief Badruddin Ajmal in the Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election.

According to the figures available during counting, Sharma had secured 5,28,938 votes against Ajmal’s 3,82,758, giving him a lead of 1,46,180 votes. Congress candidate Sibamoni Bora trailed with 95,881 votes.

While the BJP dominated the reported results in Nandigram and maintained a substantial lead in Nagaon, Tamil Nadu presented a different political picture. The ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, appeared poised to win the by-elections in Madurantakam and Dharapuram.

In Madurantakam, TVK candidate Maragatham Kumaravel had established a lead of more than 13,000 votes. In Dharapuram, P. Sathyabama was ahead by 10,003 votes as counting approached the 20th round.

In Puducherry, the ruling All India N.R. Congress (AINRC) retained the Thattanchavady Assembly constituency. Its candidate, Ashok Anand, defeated Congress candidate E. Vinayagam by 8,482 votes.

The victory provided a measure of continuity for the ruling party and demonstrated its ability to defend an important constituency against the Congress challenge. Although the result was geographically limited, it added another dimension to the varied political outcomes across the states where by-elections were held.
