As NDA achieves historic triumph in Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma’s earlier prediction stands confirmed

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has delivered a resounding victory in the Assam Assembly elections, marking a historic moment in the state’s political landscape. Winning 102 out of 126 seats, the NDA has secured a commanding two-thirds majority, paving the way for forming the government for a third consecutive term. Notably, the BJP alone achieved a majority on its own for the first time in Assam, underlining its growing dominance in the region.

At the center of this remarkable victory is Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, whose leadership and strategic acumen played a crucial role in the party’s success. Adding a fascinating twist to the electoral outcome, a handwritten note by Sarma—penned shortly after polling concluded on April 9—has gone viral on social media. In the note, he had predicted a best-case scenario of 101 seats, with 90-plus as a strong performance and 88-plus as the minimum expectation. The final tally of 102 seats exceeded even his most optimistic estimate, sparking widespread discussion about the precision of his political assessment.

Sharing the note on X (formerly Twitter), Sarma expressed humility and gratitude toward the electorate. He described the outcome as a “historic blessing by the people,” emphasizing that the results reflect the trust and confidence voters have placed in the NDA’s governance.

The BJP itself emerged as the single-largest party, winning 82 seats. Its allies also performed impressively, strengthening the alliance’s overall tally. The Bodoland Peoples Front (BPF) contested 11 seats and secured victory in 10, while the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) fought 26 seats and won 10. This cohesive performance highlights the NDA’s strong organizational network and effective seat-sharing strategy.

In contrast, the opposition suffered a significant setback. The Indian National Congress managed to win only 19 seats, reflecting a sharp decline in its influence in the state. The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), led by Badruddin Ajmal, and the Raijor Dal headed by Akhil Gogoi, secured two seats each. Meanwhile, the All India Trinamool Congress could manage to win just one seat.

A major highlight of the election was the defeat of Congress state president Gaurav Gogoi, who lost the Jorhat seat to BJP MLA Hitendranath Goswami by a margin of 23,181 votes. Despite being a three-time Member of Parliament and having won the same region in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Gogoi could not replicate his earlier success in the Assembly polls.

The scale of the NDA’s victory in Assam signals not just electoral success but also a consolidation of political power in the Northeast. With a strong mandate and renewed public confidence, the BJP-led government is now poised to continue its development agenda in the state. At the same time, the opposition faces the urgent task of introspection and rebuilding to remain relevant in Assam’s evolving political arena.
