Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday formally announced Suvendu Adhikari as the Chief Minister of West Bengal, asserting that the new BJP government would work tirelessly to fulfil the dream of “Sonar Bangla” and restore the state’s cultural and political legacy.
Addressing BJP legislators and party workers after Adhikari was elected leader of the BJP Legislative Party in West Bengal, Shah thanked the people of the state for giving the BJP a decisive mandate and defeating both the All India Trinamool Congress and the Left parties.
Shah said the victory reflected the people’s faith in the BJP despite what he described as an atmosphere of violence, intimidation and threats during the election campaign.
“In a way, due to your faith, the central figure of today’s celebrations and the future Chief Minister of Bengal, Suvendu Adhikari,” Shah said while announcing Adhikari’s name before party legislators in Kolkata.
The Home Minister said the responsibility now lies with every BJP worker to fulfil the aspirations of the people and transform West Bengal into a prosperous and fearless state.
“It is the responsibility of all of us BJP workers to pursue the goal of ‘Sonar Bangla’ and fulfil the expectations of the people of Bengal,” Shah said. Referring to the ideals of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore, he added that Bengal was moving toward a future “where the mind is free from fear and the head is held high with pride.”
Shah assured the people that the BJP government would honour the trust reposed in the party.
“I also want to say on behalf of the party that the expectations that the people of Bengal have placed in us, based on which they have given us this mandate, we will do our best to uphold that trust to the fullest,” he stated.
The senior BJP leader further declared that issues such as infiltration and cow smuggling would be dealt with firmly once the BJP government assumes office in the state.
“After BJP forms the government in Bengal, infiltration and cow smuggling will become impossible,” Shah asserted during his address.
Highlighting the party’s ideological vision for the state, Shah said the BJP government would work to revive Bengal’s cultural and spiritual heritage. He said the party aimed to free Bengal’s traditions and culture from the influence of “foreign ideologies.”
“We are moving forward in the direction of freeing Bengal’s culture and tradition from the rule influenced by foreign ideologies and once again creating the Bengal envisioned by Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, Swami Vivekananda, Sri Aurobindo and Kaviguru Tagore,” Shah said.
Earlier in the day, BJP MLAs unanimously elected Suvendu Adhikari as the leader of the BJP legislature party, paving the way for him to become the first BJP Chief Minister of West Bengal. The development marks a major political shift in the state, where the BJP has now emerged as the ruling force after years of intense electoral battles with the Trinamool Congress and Left parties.
