With the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections still months away, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav has begun taking his PDA strategy to the ground. Yadav on Thursday launched the party's PDA Rath campaign, travelling from Lucknow towards Raebareli amid a mobilisation of party workers and supporters. The initiative is aimed at strengthening the SP's outreach among backward classes, Dalits and minorities while energising its organisation ahead of the state polls.
The newly prepared PDA Rath became the centrepiece of the Samajwadi Party's latest campaign exercise as Akhilesh Yadav headed towards Raebareli. The journey marks an early expansion of the party's election-related outreach in central Uttar Pradesh.
The choice of Raebareli has also attracted political attention because the constituency is represented in the Lok Sabha by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. The SP and Congress are allies at the national level, making the location significant in the wider political landscape of Uttar Pradesh.
Yadav's programme includes interaction with local SP leaders and workers, along with a public mobilisation in the district. The party currently holds three of Raebareli's five Assembly seats, according to reports.
The PDA acronym, coined by Akhilesh Yadav in 2023, refers to Pichhda, Dalit and Alpsankhyak—backward classes, Dalits and minorities. The SP has increasingly used the formulation as a central theme of its political outreach and social-justice messaging.
Yadav has described PDA as an "alliance of progressive and positive people" and has argued that people facing hardship, distress and humiliation should unite under its banner. He has also projected the proposed PDA government as one that would focus on social justice.
The party's latest road campaign therefore seeks to take that message beyond organisational meetings and into direct public contact.
The Rath Yatra comes days after Yadav outlined an aggressive electoral strategy for the 2027 contest. He has spoken of increasing the SP's vote tally by 27,000 votes in every Assembly constituency, while party workers have been asked to strengthen the organisation down to the booth level.
The emphasis reflects the SP's attempt to convert its social-coalition strategy into a more structured grassroots campaign. The party is expected to use public meetings, worker interactions and constituency-level mobilisation as part of its preparations.
The colour of the PDA Rath has also generated political exchanges. SP leader Ashutosh Verma rejected speculation that the vehicle's appearance indicated a change in the party's traditional red colour, attributing the perceived difference to lighting and camera effects. He also accused political opponents of focusing on a peripheral issue rather than governance and public concerns.
With the PDA Rath now on the road, the SP has signalled that its preparations for the 2027 Uttar Pradesh election are moving from organisational planning towards visible public mobilisation.
