The Air India group has announced a revision in its fuel surcharge for both domestic and international routes following a sharp increase in global jet fuel prices. The revised charges will come into effect from Wednesday, April 8, for most routes, while passengers travelling to long-haul destinations such as Europe, North America, and Australia will see the updated surcharge from April 10, 2026.
In an official statement, the airline said the decision was necessitated by sustained volatility in aviation fuel costs, which have witnessed a significant upswing in recent weeks. Fuel expenses account for a major portion of an airline’s operating costs, and fluctuations in prices often have a direct impact on ticket pricing.
The airline also highlighted that the revision aligns with a calibrated approach adopted by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas and the Ministry of Civil Aviation. Both ministries have intervened to moderate the impact of rising fuel costs by capping the increase in domestic Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) prices at 25 per cent.
Despite the cap, airlines continue to face pressure from elevated global crude oil and jet fuel rates. The surcharge adjustment is seen as a balancing measure to offset operational costs while attempting to minimise the burden on passengers.
Industry experts note that such revisions are not uncommon during periods of fuel price instability. However, they caution that if global prices remain high, airlines may be compelled to review fares further or introduce additional cost-control measures.
For passengers, the revised surcharge could result in marginally higher ticket prices, particularly on long-haul international routes. Travellers are advised to check updated fare details while booking tickets, especially for journeys scheduled after the new surcharge comes into effect.
The move underscores the continuing challenges faced by the aviation sector as it navigates fluctuating fuel prices while striving to maintain affordability and operational sustainability.
