AIADMK Seals NDA Pact with PMK, Signals Expansion of

In a significant move that reshapes the political battlefield of Tamil Nadu, AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Wednesday formally announced the inclusion of the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) into the state's National Democratic Alliance (NDA) fold. The announcement followed a crucial meeting between Palaniswami and PMK president Anbumani Ramadoss at the former’s residence in Chennai, setting the stage for a consolidated opposition front ahead of the high-stakes 2026 Assembly elections.

Standing alongside Ramadoss at a joint press briefing, Palaniswami declared the AIADMK-PMK-NDA combine a "victory alliance," asserting a clear intent to dethrone the incumbent DMK government. "The PMK president, Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss, has joined the NDA alliance. More parties are also expected to join. Our alliance is a victory alliance," Palaniswami stated, underscoring the bloc's ambition to broaden its base.

Echoing the sentiment, PMK chief Anbumani Ramadoss confirmed, "PMK has joined hands with the AIADMK to form an alliance with the NDA." This formal induction marks the PMK's return to the NDA after a gap and solidifies a key social and regional constituency behind the AIADMK-led front.

A Strategic Gambit in a Charged Political Arena

The alliance comes at a time of intensified political manoeuvring in the state. The AIADMK, having recently mended its fractured ties with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) after a brief separation in 2023, is working aggressively to stitch together a formidable coalition. The addition of the PMK, with its strong grassroots presence among the Vanniyar community in northern Tamil Nadu, is seen as a critical step in countering the ruling DMK's social engineering.

The AIADMK-led NDA’s objective is clear: to reclaim power after its defeat in the 2021 Assembly polls and a subdued performance in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Palaniswami has been projecting a combative image, sharpening his attacks on the M.K. Stalin-led government. At a women’s conference in Kallakurichi earlier this week, he launched a twin assault, alleging that "sexual assaults are happening under the DMK regime" and accusing Chief Minister Stalin of usurping credit for welfare schemes originally conceived by the previous AIADMK administration.

"Tamil Nadu is scheduled to hold elections in the first half of this year," Palaniswami noted, reiterating his confidence on Tuesday that the NDA would "win big in 2026."

The Road Ahead: Consolidation vs. Confidence

While the opposition works to consolidate, the ruling DMK approaches the electoral contest with considerable momentum from its sweeping success in the 2024 parliamentary polls. The DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance appears confident but faces the perennial challenge of anti-incumbency and the task of matching the high expectations it has set.

The AIADMK-PMK-NDA pact is likely just the first of several alliance announcements in the coming months. Palaniswami’s hint at more parties joining the bloc indicates that negotiations are actively underway to create a wide-ranging coalition, potentially including smaller caste-based and regional parties.

The 2026 Tamil Nadu election is thus crystallizing into a classic showdown between a confident incumbent and a resurgent, re-aligned opposition. The formalization of the AIADMK-PMK-NDA alliance marks the opening of a decisive new chapter, ensuring a fiercely contested battle for the soul of Tamil Nadu.
