162 Vande Bharat Train Services Operational Across India: Says Government

The Government has informed that 162 Vande Bharat train services are currently operational across the country, reflecting Indian Railways' continued focus on modernising passenger transport with faster, safer and more comfortable trains. The information was shared by Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday.

The Minister said that Vande Bharat trains have been indigenously designed and manufactured under the Government's efforts to upgrade the railway network and enhance the overall travel experience for passengers. Equipped with modern amenities, improved safety features and advanced technology, the trains have emerged as a key component of Indian Railways' modernization drive.

Highlighting the next phase of the initiative, Mr Vaishnaw said the Vande Bharat Sleeper train has been developed in India specifically for long-distance travel. The sleeper version has been designed to provide greater comfort during overnight journeys while introducing higher standards of safety, convenience and passenger-friendly facilities.

He noted that the Vande Bharat Sleeper trains are expected to transform long-distance rail travel by offering modern interiors, improved onboard comfort and advanced safety systems. The introduction of sleeper variants is aimed at extending the benefits of the Vande Bharat platform beyond short and medium-distance routes.

The Minister also informed the House that the country's first Vande Bharat Sleeper service, operating between Howrah and Kamakhya, commenced regular operations in January this year. The service marks a significant milestone in the expansion of India's indigenous semi-high-speed rail network and is expected to cater to the growing demand for premium long-distance train travel.

With 162 Vande Bharat services already in operation and the rollout of sleeper versions underway, Indian Railways continues to strengthen its commitment to providing world-class rail connectivity while promoting indigenous manufacturing and technological innovation in the country's transport sector.
