W20 India Voices Concern Over Delay in Women’s Reservation Law Implementation

Women 20 (W20) India has expressed strong disappointment over the continued delay in implementing the Women’s Reservation framework under the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, calling it a significant setback for gender equality and inclusive governance in India.

The legislation, passed by Parliament in 2023, was widely hailed as a landmark step toward enhancing women’s political representation. However, its operationalization remains pending, raising concerns about the gap between policy commitments and on-ground execution.

Gap Between Commitments and Action

As an official engagement group of the G20, W20 India has consistently advocated for women-led development and inclusive decision-making. During India’s G20 Presidency, the G20 New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration underscored the importance of ensuring women’s equal participation at all levels of leadership.

W20 India noted that the delay in implementing the law contradicts these commitments and risks undermining India’s credibility as a global advocate for gender equality. The group emphasized that international leadership must be backed by tangible domestic progress.

Impact on Development Goals

The delay also has implications for achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 5, which focuses on gender equality and women’s empowerment. W20 India stressed that timely implementation of the legislation is crucial to ensuring women’s full participation in political leadership and decision-making processes.

Call for Renewed Political Will

In a recent meeting, key W20 India delegates, including Dr. Sandhya Purecha, Dr. Jyoti Kiran Shukla, Bharati Ghosh, Dr. Shamika Ravi, Bansuri Swaraj, and Dharitri Patnaik, urged stakeholders to accelerate dialogue and build consensus for the law’s implementation.

They highlighted that equitable representation in legislative bodies is not only a matter of fairness but also essential for building a resilient and inclusive democratic system.

Looking Ahead

W20 India reiterated that commitments to gender equality must be matched with decisive action. The group announced plans to organize nationwide awareness campaigns, discussion forums, and conclaves aimed at promoting women’s political and economic participation.

The delay in implementing the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, W20 India concluded, should serve as a moment for reflection and renewed determination to uphold the principles of equality, inclusion, and women-led development.
