The Central Government has set an ambitious target of constructing more than 26,000 kilometres of rural roads during the financial year 2026-27, reaffirming its commitment to strengthening rural infrastructure and enhancing connectivity across the country. To support this initiative, over ₹18,900 crore has been earmarked under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) and other rural connectivity programmes.
The announcement came during a high-level review meeting chaired by Rohit Kansal, Secretary, Department of Rural Development. The meeting assessed the progress of ongoing rural road connectivity projects and reviewed the implementation status of various schemes aimed at improving access to remote and underserved regions. Senior officials from several states, including Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, and others, participated in the discussions.
During the meeting, the Secretary emphasized the importance of achieving last-mile connectivity by linking all remaining unconnected habitations. State governments were directed to accelerate the execution of pending projects under PMGSY and the Pradhan Mantri Janjati Adivasi Nyaya Maha Abhiyan (PM-JANMAN). Particular attention was given to improving connectivity in habitations inhabited by Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs), ensuring that these communities receive better access to essential services and economic opportunities.
The progress of the Road Connectivity Project for Left-Wing Extremism (LWE)-affected areas was also reviewed. Recognizing the strategic and developmental significance of road infrastructure in these regions, states were instructed to ensure the timely completion of all sanctioned road projects. Improved connectivity in LWE-affected districts is expected to facilitate better governance, enhance security operations, and support socio-economic development.
The review meeting also highlighted the need to maintain high standards of construction quality and long-term road maintenance. States were urged to strengthen field-level inspections and adopt robust monitoring mechanisms to ensure the durability and safety of rural roads.
A key focus of the discussions was the effective utilization of the e-MARG platform, a digital system designed for real-time monitoring and maintenance of rural roads. The Centre encouraged states to make full use of the platform to track project progress, identify maintenance requirements, and improve accountability in implementation.
The government's continued investment in rural road infrastructure is expected to play a crucial role in connecting villages to markets, healthcare facilities, educational institutions, and administrative services. By expanding road networks and ensuring quality connectivity, the initiative aims to boost rural development, improve livelihoods, and contribute to inclusive economic growth across the country.
